Scholatic Book Orders!

One of my favorite things when I was a kid was to get book orders.  Even before I was actually in school my Nana, who taught Kindergarten, would give me the extra order form books.  I loved them!

I have my own class now and my own book orders to hand out.  Because it is the digital age you can now order online!  It is wonderful :)   All you need is an access code! (https://orders.scholastic.com/MYWJC)  If you are super lucky and are from my area - order way and pick up at the school! That is the only drawback of Scholastic ... I wish they would deliver to the parents address instead of sending to the teacher!

New Year - New Name!

Wow ...  Can you believe that it is now the 6th year I have been teaching?   I still think I am only 25 (haha)! As many of our readers know this school year I have a name change - from a Miss to a Mrs! I'm not sure if the students I have had for the last 2 years can handle this change, let alone myself! Let the new year begin!

R.L. Stine

Do you remember R.L. Stine?  My favorite were the pick your own adventure ones where you have 3 choices and then move your character throughout the book.  I always took the wrong turn and was ate by dogs or turned into a Vampire.  Yes, I am that person.

Another flashback is to the Are You Afraid of the Dark?  show.  Well on the Hub they have R.L. Stine's show that is just like it - The Haunting Hour.   Love it!   You can look here for more information.  We had the chance to watch the show Grampires from The Haunting Hour.  The kids loved it!   It was a great show to watch, especially around Halloween.  With the "Frankenstorm" breathing down out necks and the end of the 9weeks, we decided to take a small break and watch Part 1.  Do you know you can do many activities with this?  Think 4Squares, writing prompts, active discussions, etc.   Check out the video below!

Spy Party!

Looking for a neat birthday party theme?
This one is all made for you!  Just add food and kids :)

Spy Party is basically a printable treasure hunt.  One nice thing about this printable is you can decide where you hide stuff.  Sounds personalized, right?   The hunt includes 10 clues that all have a different challenge.  Make sure you have people to help younger kids though because some clues require players to decode, "fingerprint analysis", and others are done in invisble ink. Do you remember on A Christas Story when Ralphie waits for his decoder?  Yes, this package also includes a printable decoder wheel!  So clever!  :)
Think about having a Spy Party this summer!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Kristin's Gifts~Smart Blocks Review

When I teach, I always look for manipulatives, which are hands on materials, that would enhance the topic I am teaching as well as provide some type of independent learning.  With Smart Blocks you receive both!  I love that the blocks can be used for mathematics, as well as reading, writing, spelling, and grammar.  Lovely, isn't it?

First thing is first - If your child likes to stick random things in his/her mouth be aware that these are small enough to choke on. Break them of that habit before they come to school - no one likes  a kid who eat random stuff and ruins it for everyone.

Multiply and Divide with Sticks and Steps~Review~

Multiply and Divide with Sticks and Steps

Teach This Easy Method in Just 5 Minutes

Author: Maureen Stearns, B.A., M.S.
96 pages, Trade paperback, line illustrations throughout, For ages 5 and up, 8.25 x 11
ISBN: 978-0-9726908-5-0 $14.95
Pub Date: January 1st, 2011
Published by: Enrichment Books
Distributed by: Available at bookstores, Amazon and online.

As a Special Education teacher I am often faced with math difficulties, in both the students and parents.  I implement a home letter to inform the parents what is going on in the classroom and a bit of review on topics that we will come across in case they (the parent) need help! Trust me, this is important!  If you have a little one who is just starting school ask the teacher for a parent letter - especially if the district is using a set math curriculum.

Sticks and Steps is a great book to have in the classroom and to have as a parent!  I always implement Math Facts, which allows me as a Special Education teacher to track the students progress with addition/subtraction and multiplication/division.  You would be surprised how many student do not  understand multiplication when they encounter it in school, even HS students!  It is scary at first for a teacher, but for me it is a beginning.  It allows me to set my own goal for that student - "By the end of the 9weeks I want this student to be able to multiply up to the 9X9 with 90% proficiency."   By the way, that could also be used for Progress Monitoring or for an IEP goal/objective :)

First I need to say this book would be great for a Bell Ringer.  A Bell Ringer is the beginning 5 minutes of class to get the 'Brain in Motion' and begin to learn.  It would be extremely easy to photocopy onto overheads to use, which I highly recommend.  With some Special Education students it may be appropriate to actually copy a page for them to see in front of them and on the overhead - it often does help!

The supplementary curriculum in this book is great!  It easily allows one to follow along and try their own multiplication.  With sticks and steps it is easy to understand what the Sticks and Steps are.  I would have loved it the Sticks and Steps were different colors, not just light grey and black.  If you do copy on overheads you can use your colored markers to do this!   It is a little longer to do the sticks and step method in division, but once the student/child learns the process and reasoning behind it, they are set.  I loved how you can do LCM (Least Common Multiple)!  When I taught this last year I wish I had this idea.

Without a doubt I would recommend this to any teacher or parent.   The final words of advice from me for teaching multiplication and division are 'Always give encouragement!'

Lightning-fast Spanish For Kids and Families

Almost every year my future hubster and I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to the Riviera Maya for vacation.  As Carolyn stated in the book introduction, most people do not get past "mas cerveza por favor!"  B and I have both had 4 years of Spanish in high school, we did learn a lot but then forgot most of it. When I was in college for undergrad I chose to take a Spanish class.  When I signed up it stated TBA or the Instructor and when I went to class the first day it was one of my HS Spanish teachers!  I learned a lot in the class, had to be an example for everyone ... but talking and listening are two different things.  I was great at listening to the conversations and know what they were saying.  While we were on a dive boat in Mexico the dive crew were making jokes and I was laughing.  Our Dive Master was blown away that I could understand what they were saying, but I could only speak a few phrases back in Spanish.

I love that the author put instructions on how to use the book.  Most people would just jump right in, often trying them then forgetting the words like B and I did in HS.  As a teacher I loved that we can take the lessons and actually use them as quick lesson plans in the classroom.   Carolyn breaks the lessons up and includes various parts that are easily organized for you.  I  actually tried lesson 1 in the room while folding clothes.  It was a hoot! Sean and my dog just looked at and and were wondering why I had a laundry basket and talking in Spanish to them.

Overall this book is wonderful.  One of my favorite parts was the activities section.  I though the Map Game activity listed was a great resource. In my first 4 years of Spanish we honestly went over all the words listed.  As a teacher these are all activities I would use in and outside the classroom.  If you are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country this would be a great resource to use before you leave - you can always use it on the airplane too!  If she does get to offer additional resources for Spanish, word flash cards would be great!  Visit her on Amazon to purchase it or read more reviews!

Incredible Shrinking Bully

 The Incredible Shrinking Bully

By Mona Schmitt

Bart used to enjoy school, but that was before Frank the Tank began bullying him. Every time Frank bullies someone, he gets bigger. Will Bart find the courage to stop Frank, before it's too late? This is a picture book geared toward younger kids, in hopes of sending a positive message and opening a dialogue between kids and parents, educators, grandparents, etc. about bullying. Maybe if awareness starts early, some of the problems can be prevented later.

I loved the pictures!  My favorite picture in this book has to be when Frank snot rockets on some kids locker.  It is totally gross but so funny! This story is age appropriate and can be used in most grades K-9th.  If you wanted to adapt it to use it in higher grades you could, just use different activities to enhance the point of the book.

If I were to use it in a classroom I would read the book, discuss bullying, and finally have them create their own book about a time when they were bullied.  People of all ages love to draw, even if they say they do not - trust me.  For some students it would be difficult to get their experience out , but telling people about it could mean healing from it.    The story follows a child from getting picked on, learning how to start up for himself, and finally standing up to the bully to protect another.  A part of the book I was unsure of, it had the main character state if it came down to it he would hit Frank, which would be totally against any bully curriculum I have taught.  I would probably have a discussion on if hitting back was the right thing to do or not.  Overall it is a cute book that you can use to discuss bullying and how to overcome it.  I've included this in various curriculum packets dealing with making friends and standing up for yourself.
This would be a great resource to keep in a classroom ...
ALL teachers should enter to win a copy below to keep in theirs :)

J-O-B

Throughout the day I think of a million things - honestly I do!  I will start to vacuum then remember that I made coffee, then think I need to enter some contests, remember I made coffee and have to heat it up, watch some Ellen (she is so funny) take the dog out, eat, then remember that I was vacuuming when I look up and see it plugged in.  WHOOPS haha.   Yeah now I forgot I was going to talk about a JOB...you know one of those things we have to have to get money?  I know I almost forgot what was as well since I was furloughed as a teacher in PA.  What a terrible thing - I think I was an awesome teacher, not to mention my students and co-workers did as well!  It is a dog-eat-dog world out there though, nothing I can do about it but truck on!

Have you applied for jobs lately? There are NO teaching jobs unless I want to move 5 hours away (no) or get paid $8.00 (Won't even pay for my student loans!) ... So I am forced to wait it out like the other zillion teachers in PA who lost their job.  I admit, this no job thing is cool - I clean and make a lot of food, so it is kind of fun in a domesticated kind of way.  I loved teaching though, so it is a bummer!
